What is Buddhism All About?
Buddhism is a religion that focuses on developing the qualities of kindness, compassion and mindfulness. It was started about 2,500 years ago by a man known as the Buddha, or the Awakened One. The Buddha was not a god, but a person who gained a deep insight into the nature of our lives. His teachings thoroughly explain why there is suffering in the world, and how we can overcome it. Each person is encouraged to examine these teachings for themselves to see that they make sense.
Buddhist practices such as meditation, chanting, prayer and generosity are used to develop positive qualities that help us live in peace and harmony with other people as well as animals and the environment. You can learn more in the "About" section of this website.
Buddhist communities are known as “sanghas”. In this region, there is a diversity of sanghas that practice different forms of Buddhism. The sanghas, along with the Buddha’s teachings, offer a refuge in this world from violence, anger and hatred. If this appeals to you, then please explore the Buddha’s teachings for yourself, and look for a sangha or community of like minded people that have a practice you connect to. Our Sanghas are listed here. All are welcome.
